11/03/10 – Things you may be overlooking…

When you choose to go for the primal lifestyle you probably think that it is pretty easy to just buy a whole bunch of meats, veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds and just go to town.  That is partly true, however you have to be an informed consumer when shopping. Some reasons for you to be on the lookout

  1. Nuts – Did you buy roasted?  If you did, there is a VERY good chance that they were roasted in some peanut/cottonseed/rice bran oil which is something you definitely want to avoid.  Go for the raw cashews, almonds, walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts when shopping.
  2. Sauces – Most people would look at a plate of chicken teriyaki and just assume that since they are eating chicken, they are eating healthy.  Not true.  Everything from store bought tomato sauce to teriyaki sauce has high fructose corn syrup or some form of sugar in them.  You should avoid these sauces and try something homemade.  Remember, if your product has more than 4 ingredients listed or ones your can’t pronounce, put it back!
  3. Fruit Juice – Juices are extremely high in sugar, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has ever squeezed an orange to make juice.  It takes at least 2-3 oranges for one glass.  You are better off eating a solid piece of fruit and consuming some water.  Coconut Water (not juice) is a great post workout drink since it contains electrolytes and is low in sugar.  Just make sure the only ingredients are coconuts!  Small quantities of fruit juice used as a sweetener when baking is acceptable.

I’m sure I will think of some other things as the questions roll in.  Remember, knowing is half the battle.  G.I. Joe!
